On May 19th, members of the Senior Action Network of Eastern Washington (SANEWA) gathered at Wedgewood Senior Living for one of the organization's ongoing seasonal projects aimed at supporting local senior living communities.
Following SANEWA's monthly meeting, volunteers arrived with tools, flowers, patio furniture, and supplies to help refresh and improve the outdoor gathering areas ahead of the summer season.
Throughout the afternoon, volunteers planted flowers, cleaned and organized common outdoor spaces, assembled patio tables and chairs, and helped create a more rejuvenated environment for residents and visitors alike. The project also included the addition of a new flat top grill intended to help residents, families, and staff better enjoy outdoor meals and summer gatherings together.
Wedgewood Senior Living offers both independent living and assisted living services while also serving residents who utilize Medicaid, Medicare, and veterans benefits programs, helping provide care and housing options for seniors from a wide variety of backgrounds and financial situations.

Outdoor Spaces Support Connection and Well-Being
SANEWA organizes several projects like this throughout the year, focusing on communities that may benefit from additional support in maintaining and improving shared spaces for residents.
Research continues to highlight the importance of outdoor community spaces for older adults. According to the National Institutes of Health, outdoor gathering areas such as patios, gardens, and walking paths are among the strongest facilitators for social engagement among seniors, helping reduce isolation and support emotional and cognitive well-being.
Additional studies published in Health & Place have shown that increased access to green spaces and outdoor environments can significantly reduce anxiety, depression, and psychological distress in older adults.

For many seniors, access to comfortable outdoor spaces can provide opportunities for connection, relaxation, and a stronger sense of community—whether that means sharing a meal with neighbors, spending time with family outdoors, or simply enjoying fresh air during the warmer months.
SANEWA is a volunteer-run nonprofit organization made up of professionals and community members throughout the Spokane area who are committed to supporting and improving the lives of seniors across Eastern Washington.
